This application is for any character who is NOT a part of the ATLA/LoK series.
Player: Michael
Age: 30
Characters: N/A
Contact: Plurk: TwiceBlessed
IC Information
Name: Slade (Alias: Wil Zan)
Age: 50
Canon: Teen Titans (Cartoon)
Canon Point: N/A
Physical Description: Slade is a physically imposing man; he towers over most others at 193 cm tall, and has a lean but very muscular build. His hair is unnaturally white, which he keeps trimmed short with a neat goatee. His right eye is missing, and typically covered by an eye-patch.
. . Besides his stature, most of these physical characteristics are visually hidden beneath Slade's mask and body armor.
Canon Abilities: N/A
Possessions: In his many years as a mercenary, Slade has acquired a number of possessions useful to his craft. He wears a full suit of armor made from a combination of fine steel mesh and overlapping metal plates, as well as a helmet-like mask that is made of iron on one side and bronze on the other. His preferred weapons are a fine sword of Earth Kingdom design and a long steel staff which Slade is practiced at quickly compressing into and expanding from a compact steel cylinder via metalbending. Slade "owns" a variety of safe houses where he stores other weapons and useful items, including explosives, poisons, tranquilizers, vehicles, and gadgets. Finally, Slade has numerous bank accounts held under different aliases, amongst which he divides his substantial financial wealth.
Companion: N/A. Forever alone.
Personality: Slade's personality has gone through a number of intense shifts through his lifetime, but in recent years he typically maintains an unsettlingly calm composure, even when engaging in intensely cruel or violent activities. (It should be noted that he doesn't actually enjoy cruelty or violence; he just isn't particularly bothered by them, either. They are simply means to an end.) There are times when Slade's composure cracks, however: he really doesn't like to lose, and he must always be in control. When Slade's plans don't work or he loses control, he has been known to engage in brief outbursts of rage and frustration. He can become a bit obsessive in the pursuit of the goals he sets, and his willingness to sacrifice anything to achieve them can be frightening. It is also Slade's greatest weakness, as his obsessions have been known to cloud his typically clear judgement.
. . Slade is clever and calculating, always manipulating his environment to his benefit. He usually does not show himself until he has established a decisive advantage over his adversary, and feels no shame in fleeing if an enemy manages to achieve the advantage over him. He often prefers to bait others into traps rather than directly confront them himself, and even when a hero thinks they are fighting Slade, it is often a hired decoy instead, while the real Slade tends to business elsewhere. Slade also frequently uses underhanded psychological attacks on his enemies, using blackmail and lies to turn those who would ally against him against each other.
. . Slade is a very private person, to say the least, and prefers to remain an enigma to both his enemies and his professional allies, only telling them as much as he feels they need to know. This serves two purposes. First, the enigma gives him a decisive psychological advantage over his enemies. Second, it allows him to keep his personal life completely separate from his "professional" one. When he is out of costume, Slade is a charismatic and friendly man. He appears generous with his fortune (which he will claim he earned through various "wise investments"), is gregarious and even a bit of a flirt sometimes. The apparent personality shift is so profound that few people ever make the connection between the two identities.
. . The most recent change in Slade's personality has been a desire to find an apprentice. Though Slade's doesn't plan to die any time soon, he knows he's already lived most of his life and will not be getting any younger. Because of this, Slade wants to find someone worthy, and mold them in his own image, so that they may one day carry on his legacy even after he is dead.
OU/AU: AU
History: Slade was born with the name Wil Zan, to an earth-bending mother named Lin Zan, and a fire-bending father named Tomio Zan. He was raised in the city of Yu Dao not long after it gained independence from both the Earth Kingdom and Fire nation, and his mother and father put their bending talents together to become metalworkers of great renown. The reputation of Zan craftsmanship attracted commissions from wealthy aristocrats across the globe, and as a result young Wil Zan grew up wealthy and privileged. He had servants, entertainers, and a variety of fine tutors. He was ambitious and incredibly intelligent, excelling at nearly anything he tried: academics, art, music, a variety of martial arts, and, eventually, earth-bending. Wil Zan became arrogant and spoiled, and began to look down on most other peoples as his inferiors. When he was first informed of the Beifong Metalbending academy, he demanded to be sent, and his parents let him go.
. . His time at the Beifond academy was humbling; for the first time, he truly struggled. Metalbending did not come easily for him, and many of the other students and teachers told him that he may not be capable of it at all. After two years, when Wil Zan finally achieved the basics of metalbending, improving his skill beyond that was very slow, and he felt humiliated. He took out his frustrations by bullying other students, manipulating them and turning them against each other. The instructors considered expelling him, but fate intervened when Wil Zan received word that his parents had been killed and he returned home.
. . Wil Zan could not produce the same quality work as his parents, and even if he could he was too fixated on their death. Evidence pointed to murder, and he became obsessed with revenge. He used his family's saving to hire as many investigators as possible, as well as a number of martial arts masters to redouble his martial arts training. The clues brought back to him lead Wil Zan on a five-year quest for vengeance, during which time he started using the alias "Slade" while wearing the finest armor his parents had ever made. During his quest, he slowly improved his metalbending through practice, and became rather adept at using the techniques on his own armors and weapons, effectively increasing his speed and power while wearing metal, but was still unable to use metalbending on anything more than a half-meter away from him. His quest was forced to make many detours, and eventually Slade ending up partnering with another mercenary named Yuki Sato. Yuki expanded upon Slade's martial art's training, improving his chi-blocking technique as well as stealth and ambush tactics. The partnership was not to last, however. The two got into a situation where they would have been forced to surrender, and Slade tripped up Yuki to allow himself to get away. He came back to rescue her, but the enraged woman attacked Slade for his betrayal, and the resulting fight cost Slade his right eye. Slade never saw Yuki again, and never truly trusted anyone else for the rest of his life.
. . Slade - now in his mid 20's - eventually found his parents' killer in Republic City: a crime boss named Toru. Slade hunted Toru down and made sure the vile man died slowly and painfully, but after it was all done Slade felt no peace or resolution. Having no other purpose in life, Slade devoted himself to becoming a formidable mercenary and made Republic City his new home. It wasn't long before blackmail and information brokering were added to Slade's list of services, and Slade found that the only things that now gave him pleasure in life were the challenge of a good fight and the feel of superiority he got from manipulating others and controlling more and more of the city from behind the scenes. For 25 years, Slade has sold his services in Republic City and built up his web of powerful people that owe him favors or whom he is blackmailing. Hundreds of informants from all walks of life keep Slade in the know, and he has accumulated enough money from his work and his blackmail to make him a very wealthy man. It is no longer about the money for Slade, it is about the power he holds over others from the shadows.
